Looking to take full advantage of the reopening of international borders, the Western Cape government is targeting German tourists in their bid to kickstart the tourism sector.
As one of their only key source markets who is able to visit South Africa for leisure travel, Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier, said that it’s no secret the German market has been in a long-distance relationship with over 129 000 tourists visiting in 2019.

“German travellers can once again take advantage of the Western Cape’s warm culture, pristine weather and abundance of natural assets,” said Maynier.
“We have worked hard to ensure that Cape Town and the Western Cape is safe for travellers and ready to welcome international visitors for our summer season.
He said the national lockdown, imposed on March 27, restricted travelling and that the Western Cape offers weary travellers the ultimate cure from 2020’s cabin fever.
Maynier and his team initially launched the “We Are Open” campaign in August which targeted domestic tourists and have now expanded it to international visitors as well.
Primarily a digital-led campaign that highlights popular outdoor activities and unique open spaces, the German market is the first phase and will be followed by other markets during the later phases.
