DURBAN - Provinces and districts with low Covid-19 infection rates are set to enjoy a relaxing of SA's strict lockdown regulations from June, President Cyril Ramaphosa signalled.
According to the latest stats, only a few provinces in the country have recorded very low Covid-19 cases and infection rates.
The Northern Cape has recorded 30 cases so far with no
fatality
. The province’s Health Department has to date conducted 488 000 screenings and 1 234 tests in the province.
Followed by the North West with 52 cases and one reported death. The Bojanala District which includes Rustenburg, Brits and Hartbeespoort Dam have the highest number of infections with positive cases standing at 29, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District has five cases, Ngaka Modiri Molema District has two cases and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati has one case.
Limpopo has 54 cases and three deaths. The province has so far screened over three million people, with about 3,000 people being referred for testing and 1,942 people being tested.
Mpumalanga has recorded 66 cases and no deaths. According to data released by the Mpumalanga Department of Health, 24 recoveries have been recorded to date.
The Free State has 138 cases and six deaths. The Mangaung Metro remains the epicentre with 113 cases. So far, more than 800,000 people were screened and more than 9,000 tested for the virus in the province.
The Western Cape, especially Cape Town, is the country’s epicentre, with the highest number of Covid-19 infections. The province accounts for more than half of the national total.
Other parts of the country that are most affected is Gauteng which has the second most with 2074 infections, and the Eastern Cape has 1534 and eThekwini municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, today marks seven weeks since South Africa went into its first lockdown and the country now has more than 12,000 Covid-19 cases. A total of 386 352 tests for the novel coronavirus have been conducted to date. Two hundred and nineteen people have died of the virus while more than 4,700 have recovered.
