Revised school calendar: Here’s what you need to know

Following the decision by the government to close again and reopen on August 24, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) published a new school calendar with Grade 12 examinations concluding on December 15.

The remaining terms are:

Term 3:

August 24 - October 23

Term 4:

November 2 - December 15

It is the second time the 2020 school calendar has been revised due to the Covid-19 outbreak which leaves 163 actual school days for teachers and 156 for learners.

School terms will be completed for Grade R-11 on Tuesday, December 15 and will not be carried over into 2021.

“The department considered the impact of the decision on the current calendar. The policy process to amend the school calendar commenced taking into account the urgency of the matter,” read the statement by the DBE.

“A break in school will be needed to separate the third and fourth terms and there will be a one week break from October 26 to 30.

“The teaching, learning and assessment for the 2020 academic year must be concluded by December 15, for Grade R-11.”

The minister will issue directions for the basic education sector this week and noted that the school year for 2021 will commence on January 25.
