4 Pop Culture References to COVID-19

DURBAN - Many of the TV series, movies and books that we consume contain various wild predictions that we simply write off as either extreme or fantasy. However, these pop culture references were spot on ;

1) The Simpsons (1989 -)

The Simpsons predicted not only predicted the common name for COVID-19 but how the virus would be transmitted as well. In the episode called “Marge in Chains”, from season 4, a Japanese factory worker coughs into a box and spreads the deadly virus.

2) The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz (1981)

This novel which was written in 1981 predicted that a virus with similar symptoms to COVID-19 would originate in a place called “Wuhan-400”. The virus is also described as the “prefect weapon”.

3) Contagion (2011)

This film holds a few similarities to COVID-19, like the country of origin, how the virus was transferred and which animal virus originated from.

4) My Secret, Terrius (2018)

This Korean drama which can be found on Netflix went viral this past weekend for its 10th episode which describes a “mutant coronavirus” that had been released.
