DURBAN - Long time technology rivals Apple and Google are teaming up to develop technology that will alert people when they have come into contact with a person or people that have tested positive for COVID-19.

Apple and Google assure that no GPS or personal data will be recorded.

The tracing technology will be using the Bluetooth signals from smartphones to determine who the owner of said smartphone had come into contact with, long enough to have possibly contracted the virus.

If the person you have come into contact with, tests positive, you will receive an alert on your smartphone.

Apple and Google said in a released joint statement, “Privacy, transparency and consent are of utmost importance in this effort and we look forward to building this functionality in consultation with interested stakeholders. We will openly publish information about our work for others to analyse."
