CAPE TOWN- South African registered taverns, bars and restaurants are allowed to sell alcohol for takeaway under Level 3 lockdown regulations set to kick in on Monday.
After over two months of the national ban on alcohol, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel made the announcement during an online inter-ministerial briefing to the media.
On Thursday Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said alcohol may be sold within the hours of 9h00-17h00 from Monday to Thursday and on-site consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
Liquor stores and online alcohol websites will be permitted to trade within the same time frame.
The Liquor Trader Association had urged government to consider taverns and shebeens as collection points under level 3 lockdown.
The association argued that by allowing taverns in poorer communities to sell alcohol for home consumption it would prevent residents from travelling and help reduce illicit sales.
