CAPE TOWN- Disney has announced the indefinite postponement of the widely anticipated film “Mulan” and the delay of the “Star Wars” and “Avatar” movies by one year as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The live-action remake of the animated hit Mulan was set to be released next month after two previous postponements.
In a statement a Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said, "over the last few months, it's become clear that nothing can be set in stone when it comes to how we release films during this global health crisis, and today that means pausing our release plans for Mulan as we assess how we can most effectively bring this film to audiences around the world”.
The Avatar sequel will be released in December 2022, and the tenth episode of Star Wars in December 2023.
Director, screenwriter and co-producer of Avatar, James Cameron, said in a statement that due to the unexpected delay of live-action filming in New Zealand the special effects work in Los Angeles have not started- forcing the postponement of the film's release.
In April Disney made the decision to push back multiple Marvel films, including Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson. Soul, Pixar's new animated feature under the Disney banner, has also been postponed.
