DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Peggy Nkonyeni has taken to the streets to ramp up the fight against the coronavirus by outlining the mass screening process and the importance of social distancing.
In the coming weeks, the National government will deploy 10,000 community healthcare workers across the country to conduct door-to-door screening in our most vulnerable communities.
South Africans have responded to the government's call in great numbers however, there are those that have been disobeying the law.
According to a statement, Nkonyeni said screening is an essential part in containing the spread of the virus.
A mass screening has taken place in KwaZulu-Natal’s biggest township, Umlazi. Nkonyeni urged residents to practice good hygiene and also adhere to the rules of social distancing.
This follows the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in the Chatsworth area.
Councillor of Ward 71, Previn Vedan, stated that he has been in contact with the affected family and had taken all the necessary precautions and made interventions with the relevant authorities.
“With winter closing in, the dynamics of the virus itself could possibly change, however it is important to remain vigilant and not let down our guard,” said Nkonyeni.
“By observing the rules and regulations, staying indoors, practicing good hygiene and working together, we have a real chance at containing the spread,” she said.
