Gaming during lockdown: What genres gamers are playing

With most of the people across the globe stuck in lockdown, many are turning to gaming as a means of an escape.

Covid-19 has triggered a spike in the gaming industry with many game titles and platforms hitting record spikes in player count.

Newzoo, a games market insights and analytics company looked into what people are currently playing and the viewership data around the various genres.

What genres are people playing:

The genres that grew the most between December 2019 and March 2020:

Shooters (+40%)

Gambling games (+36%)

Deck-building games (+34%)

Arcade games (+28%)

Platformers (+25%)

Battle Royale (+17%)

Playtime spikes:

Their study revealed that the average daily playtime for the shooter genre grew from 38 minutes to 60 minutes.

About 45 percent of respondents to the survey said that they had more time to play, 17 percent said it was a means to social, and 16percent admitted it was a means to escape their current situation.
