Homemade beer could have killed Northern Cape couple

DURBAN - A Northern Cape couple has died after allegedly consuming homemade beer.

According to SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Mohale Ramatseba, two bottles of homemade beer were found on the scene and have been sent for further forensic testing.

“A 54-year-old man was found seriously ill. He later died in hospital. Two empty bottles of homemade brew has been seized for forensic tests,” said Ramatseba.

A 42- year-old woman was found dead on arrival.

Due to level 4 lockdown restrictions, people have resorted to other means of consuming alcohol - the popular method being home brewing or making your own alcohol.

Even though government has restricted the sale of beer yeast, pineapple sales have soared as consumers have found a way around the fermentation process, to produce pineapple beer.
