DURBAN - Currently pregnant with her second child, Durban mum Evashnie-Kanny Pillay says that given the current circumstances, she finds herself worried over not being able to deliver a healthy baby.

“Stress and anxiety is a normal part of pregnancy, however I find myself slightly more anxious at the thought of the situation and the reality of what is to come,” said Pillay.

The mother of one who currently holds a Masters Degree in PR and Communications, said that she is concerned about what the state of the hospitals would be like in August, when she’s due.

“As the state of the country becomes more critical and hospitals become a scary place to be in, my fears for my unborn baby is that we will not have a happy delivery. I fear not making my babies entrance into this world an exciting experience when all that surrounds us now is fear and panic,” added Pillay.

According to

Dr Jithesh Jogessar who is a practicing gynaecologist at Life Westville Hospital, pregnant women could be more susceptible.

“Pregnant women undergo physiological changes that may make them more vulnerable to viral respiratory infections, including COVID 19, as was observed in other related coronavirus infections - SARS CoV, MERS, and indeed influenza,” said Jogessar

Despite being in lockdown, Jogessar emphasises the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and keeping an active lifestyle. This is essential to a healthy pregnancy.
