CAPE TOWN -

English football fans can once again wear their supporters jerseys with pride once again as the Premier League resumed on Wednesday, 100 days after it was forced to end play due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manchester City kicked things off with a 3-0 win against Arsenal, and Manchester United and Liverpool fans will get to watch their favourite players this weekend.

Man United play Tottenham Hotspur on Friday and Liverpool travel to Everton on Sunday.

Matches will be played behind closed doors with only club staff, media and safety stewards allowed inside the stadium upon Covid-19 safety checks.

“The experience felt as weird as it looked, though: deserted streets outside the Etihad Stadium, stewards standing outside locked turnstiles and a stadium divided into Green, Amber and Red Zones. It's football, but not as we know it,” explained ESPN journalist Mark Ogden.

“Two City fans from Warrington, 20 miles away, turned up in their shirts to eat at the fish and chip shop outside the Etihad. They knew they couldn't watch the game, but they simply had to play out their prematch ritual before driving home to watch on television.

“Another fan stood outside the stadium entrance, playing "Blue Moon" on a saxophone, but that was it. Fears of fans turning up and causing a scene were unfounded,” he said.
