CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the mass roll-out of a screening and testing programme involving over 10 000 healthcare workers.

Ramaphosa made the announcement during a live televised address to the nation on Monday evening.

He said that teams would visit homes to screen and test South Africans for Covid-19 and those with symptoms will be referred to healthcare facilities.

"We will now move into a new phase of how we respond to this virus," said Ramaphosa.

He also thanked health workers, farmers and petrol attendants for risking their lives to provide essential services.

Ramaphosa said he wished to thank South Africans for their discipline but was concerned with some that are still not adhering to regulations.

“It infects the rich and poor, young and old, black and white and those who live in the cities and rural areas,”said Ramaphosa.
