Motshekga to brief nation, Unions say they are being ignored

CAPE TOWN- South Africans will find out on Tuesday about preparations and the state of readiness for the re-opening of schools.

Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga will give an update on the preparations  at 16h00.

Last week Motshekga postponed a planned briefing on the state of readiness to reopen schools.

Motshekga was expected to brief the media about the preparations of reopening of schools and also announce the dates for the reopening of schools after meeting with the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) last week in order to consider the work done by provinces including the delivery of Covid-19 essentials.

Schools across the country have been closed for over two months now due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

The department said the delay in the update has been due to some challenges with the deliveries of personal protective equipment (PPE) to certain provinces, which led to the cancellation of some contracts with service providers.

Meanwhile two of the country’s biggest unions have indicated that they will not support any decision taken on Monday by the council of ministers at their meeting to discuss the reopening of schools

The meeting, hosted by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, which includes education MECs from all nine provinces, is meant to map a way forward for the rest of the school year, which has been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. But unions have already expressed concern over the fact that their input has been ignored.

Here’s where you can watch the briefing live on Tuesday
