DURBAN - The uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 and whether or not schools will return to normal soon has been raising questions about making the change to homeschooling. Government has been unclear up until this point and parents are hesitant to send their kids back to school without clarity on their safety.
Lynelle Naidoo, a mother of two from Plattekloof in Cape Town, says she made the change to homeschooling a while ago and has never looked back since.
Her two daughters, aged 10 and 15, attend Marvel Planet which is a tutor house in Milnerton. Naidoo said ever since making the change to the homeschooling system, she has seen a huge leap in her children's academic results which has a lot to do with the size of the classes.
Marinda Hinzelman, who also has a daughter at the institution, said she could not be more pleased with the system the school has in place.
“It enables her for so many more opportunities after school. Not just to graduate and look for a job,” she said.
Hinzelman is a single parent with full-time employment as an estate agent. She said the homeschooling system fits perfectly with her busy work schedule.
When asked about the costs of homeschooling, both Hinzelman and Naidoo said it saved them a ton of money.
“You can pay government school prices but get a private school education,” said Hinzelman.
Naidoo listed her top reasons for making the change to a homeschooling system:
Cheaper than a private school
No uniform costs
A way more relaxed environment with a minimum of eight learners per class
Minimum stationery requirements
Days are much shorter so children get to do more activities
Learners get more one-on-one time with teachers
Both parents said they were uneasy about sending their kids back to school but they were certain that the institution could properly implement social distancing rules.
However, Hinzelman added, “They are kids and we cannot expect them to treat this with the same degree of severity as we do. So, for now, I am not comfortable sending my daughter back to school.”
