PSL given green light to return to training

DURBAN -The South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed that the government has approved the protocol of regulations that will allow for PSL teams to resume training.

As a measure to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country –the current season has been suspended since mid-March 2020.

“According to the Government Gazette promulgated by the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture on June 11, under the Disaster Management Act of 2002, football can resume training after complying with the regulations,” read a statement from SAFA.

The football federation also has revealed the strict measures which the PSL has to compile in order for football to resume. Among these include:

Players and staff will be isolated in a quarantined venue for the duration of their stay in a bio-safe zone.

Teams will have to put in place protocols such as sanitising and ensuring social distancing measures before training can resume.

Daily screenings for possible symptoms and temperature checks will be done on all players and staff.

All equipment at training/match facilities will be sanitised regularly to safeguard against the transmission of the virus.

“These regulations entail among others that all teams need to test for Covid-19 and chronic medical conditions (As stipulated in the Football return to training protocol adopted by the SAFA Joint Liaison Committee (JLC) and results must be sent to the Compliance Officer.

There should be continuous education about Covid-19 and the Federation must appoint a compliance officer in writing,” said SAFA.

While a restart date is still to be announced, it appears likely to be at the start of July. The PSL season was halted with Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the league standings. in the NFD Ajax Cape Town looked at the top of the NFD standings - seven points above second-placed Moroka Swallows. The Nedbank Cup semi-finals are also expected to take place if football resumptions.
