CAPE TOWN - Coronavirus infections in South Africa have broken the 1000 mark, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced on Friday. His announcement comes as South Africa recorded its first two deaths as a result of the Coronavirus amid a National lockdown in an effort to curb the virus.
"This morning, we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from COVID-19.
These two deaths occurred in the Western Cape. One at a Private Hospital and the other at a Public Hospital,"
"We will give more details later on, when we announce the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday’s number and have tipped the 1000 mark," said Mkhize
Mkhize said that governments strategy remains to slow the rate of infection so as to not overwhelm the health system. " Our main priority is to flatten the curve of infection. If we slow down the rate of infection then we can ensure our health service is not overwhelmed" said Mkhize.
