SASSA explains “bank verification” process

DURBAN – Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the South African government initiated the R350 grant relief through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to aid with the financial burdens that the Covid-19 has brought.

However, frustrated applicants took to social media to vent their frustrations after there were issues with the ‘bank verification’ process. This process is vital in order for applicants to receive their money, if the process is unsuccessful, recipients are left without financial aid.

SASSA issued a statement to the public stating that they had been experiencing some delays with the payment process. Those who have received a notification that their bank verification fail, would have to go to the Post Office to collect their money.

SASSA stated: “What may be causing delays for some applicants, is the account failing bank verification. In such cases, the client is sent to the Post Office for cash payment. However, we do not advise that you go to the Post Office until you’ve received an SMS from SASSA confirming payment of the R350 grant.”

Recipients can expect to receive their social grants from July 3. This date is set aside for pensioners and those who receive disability grants. Other social grant recipients will receive their social grants from July 6.

SASSA stated: “To effect this, SASSA has created two payment files. The first one covers the old age pension and the disability grant while the second payment file covers all other grant types such as child support grant, foster child grant and care dependency grant. Payment at cash pay points will commence from Tuesday, July 7, 2020, until Thursday, July 16, 2020.”
