CAPE TOWN - There's a glimmer of hope in South Africa's fight against Covid-19 - thats the word from President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa was addressing the nation in a live televised speech on Saturday night. The president said that the infection rate was lessening on a daily basis along with other key markers.

"Over the last three weeks, the number of new confirmed cases has dropped from a peak of over 12,000 a day to an average over the past week of around 5,000 a day," said Ramaphosa.

He said that the recovery rate also increased rapidly from 48% to 80% and that the cumulative number of cases in the country remains extremely high at 583,653.

"As we look back on the past five months. All indications are that South Africa has reached the peak and moved beyond the infection point of the curve," said Ramaphosa.
