Cape Town-based marine biologist, Justin Blake, has taken full advantage of the digital shift and created a virtual underwater experience.

Working through Airbnb’s experiences platform, Blake took advantage of their social impact policy to raise over R150 000 to help the African Shark Conservation Lab.

“I started with a few photos and a very rough concept of what I wanted to say, not how I wanted to say it or how people wanted to hear it,” said Blake.

“Seeing such a strong response and interest in what I’ve been doing for almost 13 years now was incredibly motivating.

“It’s been a life-changing experience and steep learning curve,” he said.

After completing his master's in marine biology, Blake co-founded shark research programs in South Africa and Mozambique and supports these initiatives through his tourism work.

The shark scientist said for those who are looking to move into the online space, that there are still many opportunities and that they should share their own passion and expertise as hosts.
