CAPE TOWN - Uber has been looking at ways to support drivers, their families and those less fortunate with multiple initiatives.

The latest campaign, 'You Ride. You Raise.' gave riders a chance to contribute toward feeding a person in need for a week per trip between Saturday and Sunday.

The campaign follows a previous initiative with Afrika Tikkun to provide eCoupons to feed those in need with around 66 640 drivers, couriers and their families across South Africa as part of their food relief programme.

“Over the past few months we have worked tirelessly with leading NGOs to ensure we reach the most vulnerable members of society. We hope to increase these numbers for families across South Africa with our latest initiative,” says Frans Hiemstra, General Manager, Uber Sub-Saharan Africa

“We realise a lot can still be done, however, we believe our efforts to make a difference in the lives of one family at a time is a great start, and we will continue to give back to the communities who need it the most,” added Hiemstra.

Since the pandemic began, Uber has taken steps to help keep everyone on the Uber platform safe. This includes providing the latest public health information in their apps and all drivers and riders are required to wear a mask or face covering when taking a trip.

As part of a new in-app safety checklist, before drivers can go online they will be asked to take a selfie to verify they are wearing a mask or face covering. Riders are also required to take safety precautions like washing their hands before getting in the car, sitting in the backseat, and opening windows for ventilation.
