US records 90 000 cases in one day for first time

CAPE TOWN- The United States notched a record number of new Covid-19 cases on Thursday with 90 000 diagnoses in one day, bringing the cumulative total to 9 million cases, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University.

This record-breaking grim milestone saw 91 295 new cases in 24 hours. Within the same period, 1 021 people died from the virus, bringing the country’s total to 228 625 fatalities. It is the highest recorded total in the world.

With elections in the US next week, Democrat Joe Biden has made Donald Trump’s handling of the pandemic his main attack point against the president. Trump has repeatedly insisted during the campaign trail that “we are rounding the turn” on the Covid-19 pandemic.
