DURBAN - A pride of lions took full advantage of the lockdown to lie in the middle of a road in the Kruger National Park. As the National lockdown continues, the Kruger National Park has become deserted except for their animal residents and staff.

Richard Sowry, a ranger from the park, explained that lions and other animals are not bothered by the vehicles as they are accustomed to seeing them every day however if he had approached them on foot, they would be alert. The image of the lions sleeping on the tarred road was taken with Sowry’s phone camera.

Sowry told BBC : "Lions are used to people in vehicles. All animals have much more of an instinctive fear of people on foot, so if I had walked up they would never have allowed me to get so close."

However, they are not sticking to the roads, other animals like wild dogs decided to venture into the golf course and other areas of the park where humans used to reside.

Rangers are concerned that animals will get used to the human zones of the park and associate these areas as safe zones for them to relax in.
