CAPE TOWN -

While the world patiently waits for a tested and approved Covid-19 vaccine, experts say that non-pharmaceutical interventions are currently our most powerful weapons.

Prof Anne von Gottberg, a clinical microbiologist at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases of South Africa (NICD), says there are cases that show re-infections are happening and that people should protect themselves even after they’ve recovered.

Earlier this week, global pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced that it developed a vaccine that was 90% effective in preventing infections.

However, a recent survey shows that confidence in taking a Covid-19 vaccine has dropped and fewer people are interested in getting one.

“People need to protect themselves in an ongoing fashion as they are going back into work, back to the gyms and back to social engagements,” said Von Gottberg.

“The most important thing we can do is to wear masks, to physically distance and do many things outside as possible,” she said.
