After testing positive for Covid-19 last month, 103-year-old Kitty Venn went into isolation and survived and is back on her feet at Ron Smith Care Centre in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg.
Venn’s daughter Carol Cunningham who was in Australia at the time when South Africa went into lockdown, said being away from her mother during this time left her extremely anxious.
“She has 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren who love her as much as she loves them,” said Cunningham.
“Fortunately, the care centre’s Sister Leanie Bessinger contacted us daily to report on mom’s condition, which gave us incredible peace of mind.
“Huge thanks must go to Dr Mielke, Dr Eleftheriades and Sister Bessinger and her team who tenderly nursed my mom through this awful virus. They made her comfortable, administered her oxygen and for 24/7, nursed her back to health,” she said.
Dr Eleftheriades, who cared for her during isolation, is one of two in-house doctors that works with Ron Smith Care centre’s nursing team to ensure aged residents received the best care.
“It is exceptionally remarkable that someone of her age has survived a pandemic that has ravaged old ages homes throughout the world,” said Eleftheriades.
