CAPE TOWN- As many schools across the country gear up to reopen to learners on Monday, 'Captain Stay Safe' from a comic series educates children in all eleven official South African languages about Covid-19 health, hygiene and safety tips.
Jan Louwrens, a grade five learner from Paarl Boys’ Primary School in the Western Cape has created a comic series called 'The story of the Battle of Covid-19 and Captain Stay Safe'.
Louwrens was approached by Food For Mzansi to create the series which is uploaded on their website and social media platforms every Tuesday.
The first edition of the Covid-19 comic series depict the realities children face during lockdown which include not being able to go to school or see friends. However, it is up to 'Captain Stay Safe' to inform the readers of the physical distancing and hygiene rules.
Once the comic is drawn up, illustrated and the layout is ready, he makes use of a translating company to translate the comic in 11 different languages.
"I want people to feel that they are not alone, other people also feel scared. I want people to feel safe and know that people are looking out for them for when they go to school," he said.
The 11-year-old inventor also runs a T-shirt business called Baggo Apparel where he prints his robot designs on various products.
