World’s most Googled destinations – Post lockdown

CAPE TOWN –People from across the globe are eager to travel to their next holiday destination following strict lockdowns regulations due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Research done by showed that Italy is the most Googled holiday destination for post-lockdown destinations.

The Google analysis took Google search volume into consideration for search terms “Flights to X” and “Holidays in X” to establish which countries travellers were searching.

“With the last few months throwing both our lives and the travel industry into unchartered territory, it’s natural that some people may be rather apprehensive about returning to normal life and traveling as we were before,” said Jayne Forrester, Director of International Development at

“With destinations around the world closing their borders, travel hasn’t been an option, but with these borders now re-opening, it’s great to see that even countries that were among the worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, including China and Italy, are being considered for holidays in the near future.”


With over 1.9m average annual global searches, Italy is the destination most people are eager to visit.

The Maldives followed with 1.79m searches, Mexico 1.72m and Thailand with 1.65m.

Popular destination the Maldives had over 1.7 million tourists visiting in 2019. Meanwhile, Thailand is still closed to international visitors, but once they reopen, visitors may be requested to remain in the country for a minimum of 30 days.
