CAPE TOWN - With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in South Africa and with a nationwide lockdown looming. Here are the typical symptoms for the common seasonal flu compared to COVID-19 to help you stay informed ;

Common Flu

- Fever

- Cough

- Sore throat

- Runny or stuffy nose

- Muscle or body aches

- Headaches

- Fatigue (tiredness)

COVID-19

- Fever

- Fatigue

- Sore throat

- Headache

- Muscle or joint ache or pain

- Body chills

The defining symptoms that set COVID-19 apart and which may vary from person to person are:-

- Dry cough (can be felt in your chest and not throat as the bronchial tubes

are inflamed)

- Coughing up mucus (the virus attacks the villi in the lung cells which

eventually leads to fluid building in the lungs)

- Shortness of breath (as oxygen is unable to be fully absorbed into the

bloodstream)

- Lack of smell or taste
