CAPE TOWN - FITA (Fair-Trade Tobacco Association) took to Twitter to confirm that messages circulating on social media saying the cigarette ban will be lifted this week is false.

Many smokers have been keeping their fingers crossed for the lifting of the cigarette ban, especially with the case in Pretoria High Courts against the ban taking place last week, we are still awaiting an announcement of an official outcome.

Watch the hearing here:

A decision was not made immediately, with involved parties told the outcome will be sent at a later stage via email.

This has lead to misleading messages circulating social media with false information stating the ban on cigarettes has been lifted and smokers will be seeing cigarettes back on the shelves by today (Wednesday).

FITA, who represents around 80% of Southern African licensed cigarette manufacturers, has taken to twitter confirming the message as false information saying that once allowed, they will be making an official announcement of the outcome.
