Comic Con Africa 2020 goes online

DURBAN – Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, mass gatherings throughout the country are still banned under level 3 lockdown restrictions. This has forced many events to either be cancelled or to become virtual events. Comic Con Africa is one of the latest events to take the virtual route.

The virtual Comic Con Africa is scheduled to take place on the last weekend of September 24 to 27, which are the same dates that the actual event was scheduled to take place. Organisers are aware that the online event would make the Comic Con experience challenging to replicate, however, there will be live chats, fane meet-ups and the opportunity to meet celebrities virtually.

In a statement, Reed Exhibitions Africa’s managing director Carol Weaving said: “During a pandemic which is expected to peak in September, we simply cannot go ahead with hosting the many tens of thousands of fans who attend Comic Con Africa annually. Despite months of planning, diligent consideration of the state of the pandemic dictates that cancelling the 2020 edition of Comic Con Africa is the only way forward.”

For those who have already purchased tickets for the Comic Con Africa 2020, organisers are planning to roll over the tickets for the 2021 event, with a price freeze or ticket holders may request a refund instead.

Carla Massmann, the Portfolio Director for Comic Con said: “We work hard all year to bring our fans the best in pop culture entertainment and content. By taking the Con Online we know that we will never be able to offer quite the same experience as connecting and engaging at the actual show, but we also don’t want to stop bringing our fans the fun and entertainment in 2020. Covid-19 won’t stop the dedicated fandoms and communities that Comic Con Africa engages with, so by offering an Online Con experience we can still not only keep our communities together but connect more fans and grow to ensure that our 2021 show is the biggest yet!”
