While many South Africans are now enjoying the freedom of working from home due to the pandemic, others who still prefer working from the office now have less stress in their commute to work.
A 2019 study done by traffic data and analytics company INRIX shows that the average Johannesburg driver lost 74 hours in congestion, 24 hours for drivers in Durban, 65 hours in Pretoria, and Cape Town ranking the highest with 124 hours.
Live data from TomTom currently shows that Cape Town is 24% lower than last year’s traffic congestion, Johannesburg is down by 31% and 12% down Durban.

“Clients who work from home or travel less than they would normally can benefit from a discount on their motor-premium.
“This will be achieved by offering distance-based rating categories for vehicles, which will be based on kilometers predicted to be traveled per renewal period,” a Santam spokesperson told Business Insider.
He added that despite people not returning to the office and not as much traffic happening on major routes, there may be a bigger build-up in local areas.
