DURBAN – Many South Africans that have been working abroad came back to South Africa when the countries that they have been working in, went into lockdown. Some of these repatriated citizens now want to return to the countries they were working in, as these countries reopen their economy after lockdown.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor hinted, at her annoyance with these repatriated citizens, who have asked to return to the foreign countries.
At a media briefing on Thursday Pandor said: "We cannot compel countries to take back persons, and they cannot open their borders because South Africa asks them to do so… No, we will not be assisting those who wish to return to the countries they were repatriated from after the lockdown.”
Due to the requests of the repatriated citizens, the department would now have to look at making arrangements for South Africans who have permanent residence overseas and work arrangements outside of the country.
At the media briefing, Pandor explained that there are more South Africans that are still waiting to come home. The flights to bring home South Africans are awaiting clearance from local Embassies and High Commissions. She also stated that the repatriation process cost the country just below R10 million.
