DURBAN - Chatsworth ward councillor Previn Vedan has appealed for calm after the township South of Durban recorded its first Covid-19 infection earlier this week.
Vedan said the infected person was treated at the RK Khan hospital before being transferred to Greys Hospital in Pietermaritzburg some 80 kilometres away.
He said that after news of the infection broke, people took to social media spreading fake news and even revealing the identities of the victim and his family.
“I want to send out a stern warning to people who are creating panic and who are spreading fake news, that they will be prosecuted. We are taking this very seriously. I am asking that we use official channels to gather information regarding the coronavirus,” said Vedan.
He praised the role that the South African Police Services had played through the ordeal.
"
The police played a very strong supporting role in protecting the family especially after information had been leaked to the public. I must commend the police. They assisted the family to ensure that they continue their lives with dignity,” he said.
