CAPE TOWN- Permit holders are now allowed to move between provinces and municipal districts to attend a funeral or transport a body for burial purposes.
The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) and Minister of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma have made amendments to Regulations on the COVID-19 lockdown.
To attend a funeral, you have to obtain a permit from a magistrate who is the head of office or a station commander of a police station.
Only the following persons may attend a funeral:
- spouse or partner of the deceased;
- children of the deceased, whether biological, adopted or stepchildren.
- children-in-law of the deceased;
- parents of the deceased whether biological, adopted or stepparents;
- siblings, whether biological, adopted or stepbrother or sister of the deceased;
- grandparents of the deceased; and
- persons closely affiliated to the deceased.
The amendment further determines that no more than 50 people may attend a funeral and no night vigils may be held.
Permit holders who attend funerals from outside of the province or municipal area may stay at a hotel, lodge or guest house for the duration of the funeral or cremation.
The permit must be presented to the owner or manager of the hotel, lodge or guest house.
